Our Story
The Spirit of the Bee
From the bee comes wax. From the wax comes flame. From the flame comes light.
Spiritus Apis started with a simple observation: almost every candle on the shelf is trying to hide what it's made of. Heavy fragrance, dye, a wax chosen because it's cheap rather than because it's good. We wanted to make the opposite kind of candle — one that doesn't need to hide anything.
Why we started
It began with beeswax itself. Not the idea of it — the actual material. Its warm amber colour. The faint, honeyed smell that's there before you add a single drop of fragrance. The way it burns slower and cleaner than almost anything else you can put a wick in.
Most candle companies treat wax as a delivery system for scent. We wanted to treat it as the point.
What we make
Every candle is hand-poured in small batches, here in England. Nothing is outsourced to a factory line, and nothing is made in a quantity large enough to stop paying attention to.
We work with pure beeswax where the material can speak for itself, and with natural beeswax blends where we're pairing it with scent — always chosen for what it actually smells like, never a synthetic shortcut dressed up to sound natural.
The name
Spiritus Apis is Latin for "the spirit of the bee." It's a nod to where all of this actually comes from — not a lab, not a factory, but a hive. Every jar is, in a small way, a continuation of something bees have been building since long before candles existed.
What we believe
That the things you bring into your home don't need to be complicated to feel special. That a slower evening is worth having. That a candle can be simple — one material, one flame — and still be the best thing in the room.
Sometimes all you need is a flame.
